Alternative Ibiza – Things to do this summer

Ibiza was once a haven for those seeking freedom and equality.

It was a place that was renowned for peace and love. Plus home to some of the best parties on earth.

Visitors would flock over to the white isle in their thousands each week, to experience a ‘different’ world. One which was free of judgement, surrounded by good vibes and glorious sunshine.

Now you may think that all of that is now a thing of the past, but you’d be wrong.

You can still very much enjoy that side of the island, you just need to know where to look.

Here’s some spots to visit and things to do, if you’re seeking an alternative side to your Ibiza journey this summer.

Benirrás

The famous beach of Benirrás that’s located in the north of the island, has long been known for its laid back, hippy vibe.

It’s a place where drummers would frequent of an evening. Playing to the sound of sunset, in the warm Balearic breeze.

It became even more popular in in 1991 when anti (first Gulf) war activists, hippies and fellow advocates joined together on the beach. All harmoniously creating a sound that has further continued for decades.

Sunday has been known as ‘The Day of The Drums‘ ever since.

During covid times, the local police put a stop to it.

So now a Sunday may not always be the day to go. But you’re guaranteed to catch this beautiful occurrence during your visit at sunset, on other days of the week.

Las Dalias

The San Carlos Hippy Market (Las Dalias) is no-doubt, of of the most well-known on the island.

Having started in 1985, and originally having just 5 stalls. It’s now the second largest market here, and a ‘must-visit’ whilst you’re over.

Why not pick up a unique gift for someone at home, treat yourself to a new hat or some handmade artwork?

Theres’ truly some lovely things available from local sellers.

It’s a place where you can also grab a coffee or a beer. And dance the afternoon away, to some of the best local DJs and musicians around.

Time and Space

Located on the clifftop above the peaceful and quiet bay of Cala Llentia, you’ll find Time and Space.

A man-made, sculpture, designed by Australian artist Andrew Rodgers.

Consisting of 13, solid basalt columns, the design is truly grandiose.

The highest column stands 10 meters tall, which the top being covered in 23-carat-gold. Which reflects the setting sun on December 21st, the day of the Winter Solstice.

It’s a popular location for yoga lovers, and those seeking a feel of the ‘other‘ side of Ibiza.

You’ll also find one of Rodger’s other designs here, Las Puertas de Can Soleil, or ‘The Doors to Es Vedra‘ as it’s commonly known.

It was all funded by Guy Laliberté, Canadian billionaire and founder of Cirque du Soleil.

A must see.

Es Vedrá

No doubt one of the most famous locations on the island. With uninterrupted views of the 413m tall, limestone rock, that’s one of the most iconic images of the white isle.

Located only 1.5 miles off the coast of IbizaEs Vedrá has been surrounded by myths and legends since ancient times.

Having been rumoured to have once been home to magical sea creatures, supernatural energies, sirens and sea nymphs. That would lure ships to their demise.

It’s a hotspot of people in search of spirituality, as it’s rumoured to be the third most magnetic place on earth.

Whether you believe it or not, you can’t deny that is does have a certain feel surrounding it.

Especially at sunset, when the golden, fiery-glow produces a remarkable back drop to the uninhabited island.

Head over to the view point this summer and encounter the energy for yourself.
